Starting the year right

As a leading voice in strategic communications and a prominent figure in our local business community, Tracy Leach, President and CEO of Providence Strategic Consulting, recently shared her insights with The Bakersfield Californian on how to start the year off right. Here’s what she has to say:

It seems when the calendar year starts anew each January, many of us feel the need to focus inward, to do something different, change ourselves, start over. But what if you are in a good place spiritually, financially or physically? Perhaps we don’t always need to upend our lives but rather double down on the good stuff and most importantly, think outside of ourselves at the same time.

For example, if your health is good, continue to even greater heights and bring along someone you love. If you have a close relationship with God, seek His direction regarding how you might contribute to others. If your professional career is rocking and rolling, mentor someone along the way, providing your expertise and encouragement with new challenges to conquer.

My own goals aren’t dependent on the calendar but have lately involved pondering how the greatest joy and contentment always seems to come from the gifts given, much more than the ones received. That time or treasure invested elsewhere. So, continuing to calendar the lunch or dinner with friends (you know who you are!), and quietly exulting when a team member at work “gets it” or achieves a higher rung on the ladder, and basking in the laughter of grandbabies — these are the goals no matter the month. In a selfie-focused society it’s counterintuitive but focusing externally has always been more fulfilling.
